Kentucky just passed a major abortion ban. Here’s how that could affect you.

Kentucky Legislature just became one more in a growing line of states to pass a strict abortion ban. Last night, the Kentucky state House passed a bill that would ban abortions after six weeks, otherwise known as a “heartbeat bill.” What that means is any medical practitioner offering abortions would first have to check for a heartbeat, and if one is detected, they would not be legally allowed to perform an abortion. As of now, there are only a few exceptions to the ban, for example, if the mother’s life is in danger, but if someone is seeking an abortion because of a fetal diagnosis, the ban would stand. The bill has now been sent to the Republican Governor Matt …

Common Infections During Pregnancy May Increase Child’s Risk Of Depression And Autism

As strange as it sounds, something as simple as a urinary tract infection (UTI) may increase the risk of future depression and autism in an unborn child. This is according to a new study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, involving just shy of 1.8 million children born in Sweden between 1973 and 2014. It isn’t the first to link mental health (depression) and neurodevelopmental conditions (autism spectrum disorder, or ASD) to conditions in the womb. In the past, scientists have identified correlations between birth season (and later, maternal influenza infection) and schizophrenia diagnosis – though further studies have produced something of a mixed bag of results. Previous research has also discovered links between specific infections (cytomegalovirus and herpes, for instance) and certain psychiatric disorders. However, the …

The Goat-Birthing, Tomato-Fermenting Homesteaders of YouTube

When goat birth goes well, the tiny, limp baby fires out in a red and yellow slime of blood, burst sacs, and fluids, which its mother will immediately begin lapping up with her tongue. When it doesn’t—maybe the baby is badly positioned or too big, or the mother too exhausted from her labor—the baby can get stuck. That’s what happened to Penny, a cranky Nigerian dwarf goat who happens to belong to a family of YouTubers, while she delivered her second baby this year. “Reach in and bring both legs forward,” says Lydia, the family’s tween-age daughter, reading from an old-timey birthing book. Her mother, DaNelle, tries to find the baby’s legs with latex-gloved hands, but she can’t. She has …

Ive Been Suffering From DPDR For Over 3 Years Now, And I Want People To Know What Its Like (10 Comics)

Hi fella… My name is Lulu, I am from Switzerland and I am turning 26 this year. I’ve been suffering from DPDR (depersonalization/derealisation disorder) since a little over 3 years. I was diagnosed around 2 years ago. DPDR is not very well known because it’s a weird and hard to describe mental disorder and people often suffer in silence. DPDR can be a diagnosis on its own but in often cases it‘s also a symptom of another mental disorder such as anxiety, dissociative disorders, etc… It‘s often caused by smoking weed, trauma and other things. For me, DPDR is a 24/7 thing. For the first year, I suffered in silence and was unable to do anything. I could not describe …

Is porn making young men impotent?

Up to a third of young men now experience erectile dysfunction. Some are turning to extreme measures such as penile implants but is kicking their pornography habit the only solution? There is an ad campaign adorning the tunnels of the London Underground bearing the slogan ED IS DEAD next to a photograph of a wholesome-looking man in his prime. Dont worry, it says in smaller writing beneath. Eds not a guy. Its a guy thing. Its short for erectile dysfunction. The posters are promoting Reward Foundation, an educational charity focusing on love, sex and the internet. Until 2002, the incidence of men under 40 with ED was around 2-3%. Since 2008, when free-streaming, high-definition porn became so readily available, it …

Is it ever too late to reply to an email? | Oliver Burkeman

Social expectations about digital etiquette have never been more in flux. The solution? Avoid worrying about it altogether You know youve reached a crisis point in your email backlog when youre obliged as I was recently to confront the following conundrum of electronic etiquette: is it ruder to reply to an email after three months than not to reply at all? On one hand, obviously, given since 1969. Three months is, lets be clear, far too long to delay a reply. But I suspect were entering a phase in emails history when social expectations about such matters have never been more in flux. As the burden of digital communication keeps increasing, digital minimalism is entering the mainstream. (I recommend a …

Trump Administration Aims To Use Facebook To Spy On People Collecting Disability

spy on people collecting federal disability payments, The New York Times reported. The aim is to use a form of federal surveillance to monitor social media posts of Social Security disability payment recipients to see whether they’re really disabled. Critics say social media photos and posts may be a poor representation of someone’s disability. Judging a mental health issue from a photo, for example, would be nearly impossible.  More than 10 million people receive Social Security disability benefits worth more than $11 billion a month. Recipients have paid into the system through payroll taxes. The new focus on fraud comes as applications for disability payments plunged 29 percent last year from a peak of 2.9 million in 2010, according to …

No, Nutritional Supplement Pills Don’t Help People Fight Depression

Building on the whole “healthy body, healthy mind” school of thought, it’s long been suggested that improving diets could help people stave off depression. While that promising claim needs further investigation, one thing is clear: just taking dietary supplements is not enough. Recent research has shown that people who took daily nutritional supplements were just as likely to suffer from depression as those who took placebos. In short, the supplements appeared to have little to no effect on people’s mental health. “Diet and nutrition held promise as one means to reach large numbers of people. However, this trial convincingly demonstrates that nutritional supplements do not help to prevent depression,” Professor Ed Watkins, an expert in Experimental and Applied Clinical Psychology at the University …

Sprucing up your community doesn’t have to be complicated. Try these simple tips.

We all want to live in clean, well-kept communities—but sometimes humans make that difficult. Garbage happens when we’re not careful. The wind knocks over someone’s unsecured trash bin and the contents blow all over. Someone pulls keys out of their pocket and a gum wrapper falls out. Litterbugs toss fast food wrappers out of their car windows. Whether intentional or not, trash makes its way into gutters, bushes and waterways every day. No one likes to walk down the street and see garbage littering the ground or graffiti covering buildings. But it’s not just unsightly. According to Keeping America Beautiful, the largest litter study conducted in the U.S., litter abatement costs more than $11 billion dollars per year. Photo by …

Minister rejects ‘May should quit’ reports

Brexit could be lost if deal is rejected, Hunt warns Tories Big Brexit vote: What do I need to know? On Tuesday, MPs will vote for a second time on the withdrawal deal Mrs May has negotiated with the European Union – ahead of the UK’s scheduled departure from the bloc on 29 March. They rejected it by a historic margin in January – with many Tory Brexiteers opposing it because of concerns about the “backstop” proposal in the agreement, aimed at avoiding a return to a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Many believe the deal is heading for another defeat, with little sign of progress in continuing talks with the EU about getting legally …
