Bernie Sanders Tests An Updated Pitch In Once-Hostile Territory

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. ― When Sen. (I-Vt.) traveled to South Carolina for the first time as a 2020 presidential candidate on Thursday,  in the state’s Democratic presidential primary three years earlier seemed like a distant memory. Mounting the stage in the gymnasium of a Baptist church to the Doobie Brothers’ “Taking It To The Streets,” Sanders received the kind of fawning reception to which he has become accustomed in larger and more liberal American cities. The crowd, 1,600 strong, according to Sanders’ campaign, welcomed him with chants of “Ber-nie” and roars of support that initially made it hard for him to complete his sentences. “Thank you for being part of a campaign which is not only going to win the …

Woman With Penicillin Allergy Went Into Anaphylaxis After Performing Oral Sex

A 31-year-old woman showed up at an emergency room experiencing shortness of breath, hives all over her body, and “abundant vomiting”.  She hadn’t been exposed to the Sun, eaten anything unusual, and didn’t have any insect bites upon inspection. Despite this, she was diagnosed with moderate anaphylaxis, which can be a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction, though doctors didn’t know immediately what caused it. The only allergy the unnamed woman has is penicillin, which she was diagnosed with as a child. But, she hadn’t taken any medication, let alone something she knew she was allergic to, doctors write in a BMJ Case Report. However, she had recently had oral sex with a man who was taking amoxicillin-clavulanic acid treatment, which contains penicillin, leading the team …

Smoking Just One Cigarette During Pregnancy Doubles Risk Of Sudden Infant Death

Mothers who smoke any number of cigarettes – even one a day – during their pregnancy more than double their risk of seeing their infant die before their first birthday, according to new research published in Pediatrics. Women smoking an average of between one and 20 cigarettes a day increase the odds by 0.07 with each cigarette smoked – but even women who smoked before their pregnancy saw an increased risk in their child dying from sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) – an unexplainable death of an otherwise healthy baby less than a year old. To understand how SUID deaths relate to maternal cigarette use, researchers analyzed data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on smoking habits …

From casinos to cannabis: the Native Americans embracing the pot revolution

The long read: Gambling transformed reservations 40 years ago, but often only enriched a few. Could the legal marijuana business prove more broadly beneficial? In February 2015, amid the cedar masks, canoe paddles and totem poles at the Tulalip Resort Casino north of Seattle, the talk was all about pot. Indian country had been abuzz about cannabis since the previous autumn, when the Justice Department had released a memorandum which seemed to open the way for tribal cannabis as a manifestation of tribal sovereignty. (I grew up Ojibwe on a reservation in Minnesota, and I use the word Indian to refer to indigenous people within the US. I also use indigenous, Native and American Indian. These terms have come in …

Pet Dog In Colorado Catches Plague, Exposes Over 100 Vets Before They Realize

A dog in Colorado got sick and was taken to the vet, where, after some trial and error, it was finally diagnosed with the plague. By this point, it had been in contact with well over 100 vets, exposing them to the potentially deadly infection, according to a new case report in Emerging Infectious Diseases. In December 2017, a 3-year-old mixed-breed dog was taken to a Colorado vet as it was suffering from lethargy and fever. It turned out the dog had been spotted sniffing a dead prairie dog four days previously. Prairie dogs, like most rodents, can carry the plague, and it can be transmissible between other species, including humans, through biting or fleas. The vets did consider plague, …

Louis Tomlinson’s Little Sister Flicit Dead At 18 – Perez Hilton

This is so shocking and heartbreaking! Louis Tomlinson has been hit with family tragedy yet again. His little sister Félicité Tomlinson has passed away at the unthinkably premature age of 18. The young model and fashion designer was This truly is out of nowhere. By all accounts Fizzy was a perfectly healthy young woman; in fact, she had just announced in January she’d quit smoking and drinking. The only health problem the teen was known to suffer from was sciatica, which is not known to cause heart problems. (There are cases in which peripheral vascular disease is mistaken for spinal issues due to overlapping symptoms of leg pain. But cases of PAD in people under 25 years old is very rare.) Louis …

Queen Vs New Product Line Is A Game Changer For Feminine Wellness Betches

Sponsored by Queen V Last summer (guys, remember summer?!), I wrote about the launch of feminine wellness brand Queen V. In case you missed it, Queen V is a female-run company that shares my frustration with mainstream feminine hygiene products: they’re gross, expensive, loaded with chemicals, and—in my personal experience—work about half the time. (If you’re internally rolling your eyes right now, you are either a man or have never had a vaginal issue. I will not be accepting comments from either group at this time.) Queen V’s products one-up existing products at every turn: they’re affordable, formulated with your comfort and health in mind, and f*cking cute. (Sue me, I love a good bathroom shelf aesthetic.)  I’m not just …

Kat Von D Addresses The Nazi & Anti-Vax Rumors In New Video – But Twitter Isn’t Thrilled With Her Response! – Perez Hilton

Kat Von D is sick and tired of her and her family being called Nazis, so she’s clearing the air! In a YouTube video that went live on Thursday, the tattoo artist announced she wanted to address claims that she’s anti-Semitic and an anti-vaxxer. For those who have been following Kat’s career, you’ll know that these rumors have been following her around, with word of her being a Adding that the network offered her own spin-off — LA Ink — after she quit the original show over the “hazing,” the 37-year-old continued how “paranoid” the unnamed cast member became: “He thought he could cancel my show by going to the network and showing this 8 x 10 with a forged anti-Semitic message …

What A Personal Trainer Eats In A Day Betches

Whenever I tell someone I’m in the fitness industry, I always get a lot of questions about what a personal trainer eats. Because of my background, I think people assume I’m always very uptight about food, which I am, to an extent. I think that it’s very important for everyone to put quality nutrition into their bodies. Like, if you drove a Lambo would you fill it up with anything less than premium gas? No. However, I am SO FAR from being super restrictive about food, and I take the same approach to my clients. Because I used to have such a shaky history with food in my middle and high school years, I am very aware of the effect …

A Genetic Mutation Might Explain Why Birth Control Can Fail

For nearly 60 years, hormonal contraceptives have freed women from their own biology, giving them autonomy over decisions about if, when, and how to start a family. But no form of hormonal birth control—pill, patch, ring, IUD—is 100 percent effective. Why that is, no one knows exactly. Now new research suggests that some of these mysterious failures might actually be due to differences in DNA. In a study published today in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine discovered that about 5 percent of women possess a genetic mutation that makes them produce an extra hormone-dismantling enzyme. This enzyme eats away at the ovulation-suppressing effects of hormonal birth control, lowering its effectiveness. They …

To combat a terrible measles epidemic, Italy is no longer putting up with unvaccinated kids.

via Sanofi Pasteur / Flickr Between 2017 and 2018 the number of global measles cases increased by 48.1% according to calculations by UNICEF. Recent outbreaks have been caused by poor health infrastructure, low awareness, complacency and, in the developed world, a backlash against vaccinations. Even though report after report shows there is no link between vaccinations and autism, a small percentage of people in the developed world refuse to vaccinate their children resulting in outbreaks of diseases that were nearly eradicated. In the U.S., children must have the following vaccinations to attend public school: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis; polio, measles, and rubella. However, in 47 states, parents can get an exception for personal reasons. The only states that prohibit such exemptions …

30 People Whose Genetics Made Them Unique

#2 My Friend’s Iris Is Split In Half Those are some pretty colored contacts right? Nope, this person has heterochromia iridis, a genetic variation that manifests in multicolored eyes. The duel coloring is caused by an excess or lack of melanin resulting from genetics, disease or an injury. The perfect split you see in the image below is called sectoral heterochromia and occurs when there are two different colors in the same iris. There is a dominant color and then a splash of second one. #4 My Brother-In-Law Got A Thumb From Each Parent Wether we like it or not we are all a combination of the genes our parents gave us. Each gene is a blueprint for our bodies …

Manhattan Is About To Get Bigger To Prepare For Climate Change

No matter how deep you bury your head in the sand, the effects of climate change are here and they’re only going to get worse. To brace for the coming storm, both figuratively and literally, New York City has drummed up a grand plan to make the Big Apple a little bit bigger. Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced his plan to extend the Manhattan shoreline into the East River to protect lower Manhattan, the hub of the city’s financial markets, from the perils of climate change. Given the city’s low-lying topography and a lack of space, this is not an easy challenge. The Lower Manhattan Climate Resiliency project could involve extending Lower Manhattan’s shoreline by up to 60 meters (500 …

The tyranny of clock changing for daylight saving needs to end

(CNN)Last year marked 100 years since the United States established daylight saving time. Researchers have also found an increase in heart attacks, workplace injuries and traffic accidents, especially in the days after the “spring forward” clock change, all due to the disruptions in sleep. Sign up for our new newsletter. Join us on Twitter and Facebook Many states are starting to address the issue. But for those who are hoping we can #LockTheClock after this weekend’s change, I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon. My best guess after working with legislators around the country for five years is that if California and New York vote to make the shift permanent in 2020, effective after we spring forward in …
