Pennsylvania attorney general sues Purdue Pharma over opioid epidemic

(CNN)Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro says Purdue Pharma is responsible for an opioid epidemic that has ravaged the state. On Tuesday, he announced that he had sued the pharmaceutical giant over it. “The complaint is part of a continuing effort to try these cases in the court of public opinion rather than the justice system. Such allegations demand clear evidence linking the conduct alleged to the harm described, but we believe the state fails to show such causation and offers little evidence to support its sweeping legal claims,” the company said in a statement. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong filed a lawsuit against the company in April. However, Shapiro said that Pennsylvania’s suit is the first to greatly detail how …

3D Images Show How A Baby’s Head Is Squooshed During Childbirth

Feel sorry for mothers. Not only is the cost of having a child simply extortionate, but the human pelvis is not particularly well-adapted for the actual process of giving birth to large-headed newborns. One of the ways humans have evolved to get around this narrow-pelvis, big-head dilemma is with a soft, moldable skull that fuses and hardens at some point between seven and 18 months. This squishy skull can shapeshift under pressure, allowing it to squeeze through the birth canal. Now, scientists have used 3D scanning to demonstrate how the fetal brain changes shape during the delivery process. The results have been published in the journal PLOS ONE.   Twenty-seven pregnant women were scanned with an MRI machine between 36 and 39 …

A 75-year-long study just revealed the key to happiness, and most of us are getting it so very wrong.

There are lots of things that can contribute to happiness and fulfillment, and they vary with each individual. A 75-year-long study, however, has found one common element that’s believed to play a pivotal role in most people’s genuine, longstanding happiness. Good ol’ fashioned friendship. This study, which is considered the longest ongoing study on human happiness, started at Harvard University in 1938 with 724 men, 60 of whom are still alive today (women were added later because misogyny). After decades of observation, one of the study’s leaders, Robert Waldinger, came to this conclusion: “Good relationships keep us happier and healthier,” he stated in a TED Talk on the subject.   That’s right, friends. You don’t have to make millions of …

Heres What People In The 1900s Predicted Our Homes Would Look Like Today (7 Pics)

Raise your hands if you think that by 2100, we will have flying cars, robots with artificial intelligence, holidays on Mars and utterly intelligent houses. People have been making predictions about what the future would look like for ages. Sadly, they are usually far-fetched or even utopian and society doesn’t seem to keep up with creative wishes. So, are the predictions extremely ambitious or we don’t put enough effort into bringing wild ideas to life? There’s a huge question mark tied to what’s coming in the future. And although cutting-edge technology moves at a fast pace and many ideas that seemed outlandish in the past are more than real nowadays, we shouldn’t be carried away by fantasies because the future …

Youll Get Used To The Poop: Nurse Reveals The Heartbreaking Situations That Actually Make Their Stomach Turn

Whilst the actors, musicians, politicians and sports stars hog most of the world’s attention (and cash), the true heroes of our society work selflessly and quietly in the background, saving lives and performing medical miracles on a daily basis. Medical staff are criminally overworked and underappreciated for what they do. Can you imagine being faced with human tragedy, day after day? Knowing that sometimes, despite your best efforts, you’re going to have to give the news to a patient’s loved one, the kind of news nobody ever wants to hear? It must take an enormous toll on the mental and emotional health of these incredibly brave and dedicated people, not to mention the physical strain of 14-hour shifts, chronic stress …

‘Bring your own lunchbox to cut waste’

“People are saying that they are buying food to take out because life has got busier,” says Hubbub’s Tessa Tricks. “It’s that sense that, ‘I’m important and having this on the go will make me do things more efficiently,’ but sometimes sitting with crockery and cutlery and enjoying it would be better.” Ms Tricks argues it is usually both healthier and cheaper to make a packed lunch, but the charity is also encouraging people to pop a plastic box in their bag alongside their reusable coffee cup, if they plan to buy takeaway food. Food outlets ‘should list all ingredients’ ‘Eco-friendly’ bags survive three years in soil Food waste ‘worse for climate than plastic’ Does your dinner come from a …

Here’s proof of how Trump has mixed up Washington: Some Democrats think he might want to be impeached

(CNN)It seems a crazy idea that any president would actually want to be impeached. But it’s also possible their leaders could be talking up the idea that Trump wants to be impeached as a way to quell discontent among some base activists that Washington Democrats are not doing more to constrain the President. The question is not going away, given Trump’s staggeringly broad effort to subvert investigations of his presidency, campaign, personal finances and business career. “The President is almost self-impeaching because he is, every day, demonstrating more obstruction of justice and disrespect for Congress’ legitimate role to subpoena,” Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday. One of Pelosi’s top lieutenants, House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff, is, like Pelosi, …
